Genealogy Research
The St. Louis County Recorder’s office is open to Genealogy researchers and others who would like to do research in our offices. We are open Monday through Friday from 8am to 4:30pm. Researchers can access real estate records, birth, death records, and marriage records.
Most records are available to the public, but confirmation can be made by calling the Recorder’s office.
Genealogy Guidance
Birth and death records are not always accessible to people doing genealogy research and it may be helpful to have someone assist, such as a genealogist. An independent volunteer genealogist is typically available in the Duluth Courthouse on Thursdays to assist with requests. You may call ahead to the recorder’s office to discuss scheduling a specific one-hour time slot. There are no guarantees that this service will be available and any additional time necessary to complete research will be as determined by the volunteer genealogist. Any charges for research will be separate and distinct from any copy fees or charges established by the St. Louis County Recorder’s office. Recorder staff can also assist, depending on the request.
Please note: there are no naturalization records kept in the Recorder’s office. District, County, and City Court naturalization records are on microfilm at the Duluth Public Library. The Federal Courthouse in Duluth has an index to federal naturalization records only.
