To request a copy of a death certificate an individual must meet the Tangible Interest Requirements.

Death Certificate Fee Information
 1 Certified Copy - $13.00
 1 Non-certified Copy - $13.00

 Each additional copy of the same record purchased at the same time - $6.00. 
◾Make your check or money order payable to the St. Louis County Recorder.
◾United States of America Currency only.

Order a Death Certificate in Person

Locations: Duluth Courthouse, Virginia Government Service Center, Hibbing Courthouse,  Ely Government Service Center or Cook Government Services Center.
Please complete a Death Certificate Application prior to your visit. 

 

If you are an authorized requester, you will need to provide your valid picture identification and possibly additional proof of tangible interest.

Please read before ordering a death certificate.

  • Print out the death certificate application and complete.
  • For a "non-certified" Death Certificate, your signature does not require notarization.
  • Have your signature notarized and mail the completed application form and payment to:

Order a Death Certificate by Email

To order by email and pay online: 

  • Print and complete the death certificate application form legibly. Please include your telephone number with area code.
  • Have your signature notarized with a notary seal that can be read by a scanned image.
  • *Do not make an online payment until the application is complete.* St. Louis County offers credit card payments (Visa, MasterCard, American Express or Discover) through ACI Payments. You will be charged a service fee for the use of this service. Please use the date of death as the transaction number so that we can process the order quickly. When you know the amount, go to the ACI Payments web site. Next, click on “Local Payments”. Choose the State of “Minnesota”, payment entity of “St. Louis County”, and payment type “death record”. Follow the remaining steps as prompted. Print out or save the Confirmation of Payment page that you receive from ACI Payments Inc. so you can attach to the email with the application.   • Email the completed notarized Death Application form and ACI Payments confirmation to birthdeathmarriage@stlouiscountymn.gov .
