To request a copy of a death certificate an individual must meet the Tangible Interest Requirements.

 1 Certified Copy - $13.00
 1 Non-certified Copy - $13.00

 Each additional copy of the same record purchased at the same time - $6.00.

Order a Death Certificate in Person

We are committed to protecting the safety of our citizens and employees. Therefore, we highly encourage customers to work with the Recorder’s Office remotely by email, fax, or drop box. Duluth, Hibbing and Virginia offices will be closed to public access and will serve the public by appointment only.  To schedule an appointment online, click on the location listed below using Chrome, Edge Chromium, Firefox or Mozilla to create an appointment.

Please complete a death certificate application prior to your visit. 
Please wear a mask for the appointment and remain in your vehicle. 
Appointment meeting locations: 
Duluth Courthouse customers will come to the Duluth Courthouse first street main entrance. 
Hibbing Courthouse customers may park in the designated parking spot in the parking lot located on the north side of the Hibbing Courthouse. 
Virginia Government Service Center customers may park in the designated parking spot in the parking lot located on the north side of the GSC.

Order a Death Certificate by Mail


Please read before ordering a death certificate.

  • Print out the death certificate application and complete.
  • For a "non-certified" Death Certificate, your signature does not require notarization.
  • Have your signature notarized and mail the completed application form and payment to:

If you cannot download the application, please call 218-726-2559 or send an email to birthdeathmarriage@stlouiscountymn.gov to request an application. Allow 1 – 2 weeks for processing applications including mail delivery time.

Order a Death Certificate by Fax or Email

To order by fax or email and pay online: 

  • Print and complete the death certificate application form legibly. Please include your telephone number with area code.
  • Have your signature notarized with a notary seal that can be read by fax or a scanned image.
  • St. Louis County offers credit card payments (Visa, MasterCard, American Express or Discover) through Official Payments Corporation. You will be charged a service fee for the use of this service. Please use the date of death as the transaction number so that we can process the order quickly. When you know the amount, go to the Official Payments Corporation web site. Next, click on “Local Payments”. Choose the State of “Minnesota”, payment entity of “St. Louis County”, and payment type “death record”. Follow the remaining steps as prompted. Print out or save the Confirmation of Payment page that you receive from Official Payments Corporation so you can attach to the email or fax with the application.   • Fax the completed notarized Death Application form and Official Payments Confirmation to 218-725-5052 or email the forms to birthdeathmarriage@stlouiscountymn.gov .
