An Individual must have Tangible Interest to obtain a birth certificate.  Some birth certificates are confidential and can only be released to certain individuals or the parent on the record.

Birth Certificate Fee Information
1 Certified Copy - $26.00
1 Non-Certified Copy - $13.00

Each additional copy of the same certified record purchased at the same time - $19.00. Each additional copy of the same non-certified record purchased at the same time - $6.00.

Order a Birth Certificate in Person

Locations: Duluth Courthouse, Virginia Government Service Center, Hibbing Courthouse, Ely Government Service Center, or Cook Government Service Center.


Please complete a Birth Certificate Application prior to your visit. Note: Notarization is not required when ordering a birth certificate in person.

 

If you are an authorized requester, you will need to provide your valid picture identification and possibly additional proof of tangible interest. 

Order a Birth Certificate by Mail

Instructions for ordering a Birth Certificate:

  • Print and complete the Birth Certificate Application form.
  • For a "non-certified" Birth Certificate, your signature does not require notarization.
  • For a "certified" Birth Certificate, have your signature notarized and mail the completed application and payment to:

Allow 1 – 2 weeks for processing applications including mail delivery time.

Order a Birth Certificate by Email

*Do not pay online until the completed application is notarized. 

To order and pay online send both the completed application and payment confirmation by email to birthdeathmarriage@stlouiscountymn.gov: 

  • Print and complete the birth certificate application legibly. Please include your telephone number with area code.
  • Have your signature notarized with a notary seal that can be read email.
  • *Do not pay online until the application is completed. St. Louis County offers credit card payments (Visa, MasterCard, American Express or Discover) through ACI Payments. You will be charged a service fee for the use of this service. Please use the birth date as the transaction number so that we can process the order quickly. When you know the amount, go to the ACI Payment web site. Next, click on “Local Payments”. Choose the State of “Minnesota”, payment entity of “St. Louis County”, and payment type of “birth record”. Follow the remaining steps as prompted. Print out or save the Confirmation of Payment page that you receive from ACI Payment Inc so you can attach to the email with the application.  Located at: https://www.acipayonline.com/index.jsp
