Environmental Services provides comprehensive management of garbage and recycling for all of the county with the exception of Duluth and surrounding townships, which are served by the Western Lake Superior Sanitary District (WLSSD). This means we serve the majority of the County's land area, and about half of the county's population.
The purpose of our services is to protect the health, welfare and safety of the public; prevent the spread of disease and creation of nuisances; conserve natural resources and maintain the beauty and quality of the environment.
The following are served by WLSSD: Alden, Canosia, Duluth, Gnesen, Grand Lake, Fredenberg, Lakewood, Marion Lake, Midway, Normanna, North Star and Solway townships, and the cities of Duluth, Hermantown, Proctor and Rice Lake.
