Northeast Regional Corrections Center (NERCC) escapee JESSE JAMES CRABTREE was located and arrested on 5/16/2021 at approx. 10:15 PM.  A party that lives in Industrial Township called CRABTREE in as a suspicious person on their property.  The St. Louis County Sheriff’s Office responded.  K9 Donny and a drone team tracked CRABTREE down and located him in a swamp.  CRABTREE was arrested and lodged at the St. Louis County Jail on an escape from custody charge.

At approximately 1430 hours, St. Louis County Deputies, St. Louis County Rescue Squad, Alborn Fire Department, Meadowlands Ambulance, Mayo Ambulance, and Life Link Helicopter, responded to the area of Hwy 53 and Swan Lake Road in New Independence Township.  

It was reported a male had overturned in a UTV and had a head injury.  Upon arrival, First Responders, located the victim approximately 1.5 miles east of the Independence Rest area on Hwy 53. 

It appeared the male was executing a u-turn when his UTV overturned, causing him to be ejected and the UTV landed on him.  The victim was not seatbelted in and was not wearing a helmet.  The victim sustained a serious head injury and was eventually transported by Mayo Ambulance to Essentia St. Marys, in Duluth.  The accident remains under investigation by the St. Louis County Sheriff's Office.

On 5/01/2021 at around noon, the St. Louis County Sheriff's Office along with multiple other fire departments and agencies responded to the area of Hill Road and Haavisto Road in Sandy Township for a large grass fire.  Deputies worked to evacuate the 7700-7900 block of Hill Road and Haavisto Road due to a large grass fire and dangerous fire conditions at the time.  Approximately 25 acres have burned but no structures have been damaged.  Fire crews continue to fight the fire at this time but fire crews have made gains in fighting the fire and there is no longer a need to evacuate. 

On 5/01/2021 the St. Louis County Sheriff's Office, the St. Louis County Rescue Squad and area EMS responded to an ATV crash near Kinney in Great Scott Township.  Koivisto was at the end of a group of ATV riders when he hit a rut in the off road trail and lost control of his ATV.  His ATV rolled and he was thrown from it, suffering a severe leg injury.  Koivisto was alone on his ATV.  He was transported by Virginia Ambulance to the Virginia Hospital with the leg injury.  The incident remains under investigation at this time.
