Application Details and Tips

  • Only experience occurring during the ten most recent years will be used in determining experience and training ratings.
  • Include all related job experience on the application even if you attach a resume to ensure that you are given credit for all experience and training.
  • List each promotion as a separate job, even though it may have been with the same department or organization.
  • Part-time work experience must be prorated to the number of hours worked, using a 40-hour work week as the standard for full-time work.
  • Read and answer Supplemental Questionnaire carefully.  Responses are typically scored by a subject matter expert and may need to be supported by the application (education, jobs, training, and certifications). Be thorough.
  • Your application and supporting material becomes the property of St. Louis County and cannot be returned.

Selection Process

Once your application is received, it will be reviewed to determine whether or not the minimum qualifications have been met. When the determination is made, applications are either scored for experience and training or candidates are notified of eligibility to participate in the next level of exams.  After all candidates have been scored notification is sent regarding the final score. Passing candidates are placed on the eligible register. Candidates who do not pass all the required examinations are notified and must re-apply during the next posting.

St Louis County uses several different methods to determine your final score such as:

  • Written/Computerized/Video Exam
  • Supplemental Questionnaire
  • Oral Examination (consisting of 3 member panel)
  • Experience & Training (Points awarded for most recent 10 years; experience beyond ten years can be used to satisfy minimum requirements but will not be scored)
  • Equipment (mainly for promotional examinations)

Any combination of these can be used to determine the final scoring. All applicants that qualify for the eligible register will receive notification of their score. The top twenty names (open/competitive recruitment) or top three names (promotional) are referred to the interviewing authority, where interviews and final selection take place. Written exam answer sheets and other assessment materials are available for review within 60 days; the test questions are not made available to candidates for review.
