Area loggers harvest trees as fundraiser for children's hospital

More than a dozen logging companies and professionals from northern Minnesota have partnered together on a logging project to raise funds for Gillette Children's Specialty Healthcare. Log a Load for Kids is an annual, nationwide effort that involves harvesting timber and donating the value of the timber to local children's hospitals to fund treatment, education and research.

On Oct 16, 2023 members of the Lake Superior Violent Offenders Task Force (LSVOTF) assisted agents from the Bureau of Criminal Apprehension and US Postal Inspectors Office with a narcotics investigation. During the incident, LSVOTF K9 Murphy conducted a sniff of a suspicious package and indicated the presence of narcotics. A search warrant of the package revealed approximately 5lbs of methamphetamine. Two individuals were taken into custody.

St. Louis County to waive late fee by a day on property tax payments

Due to a problem in the online payment service that St. Louis County contracts with for property tax payments, citizens have been unable to pay their property taxes online today, which is the deadline to pay for the second half of the year. As a result, the St. Louis County Auditor will be waiving late fees for property tax payments as long as they are paid by or mailed with a postmark of October 17, 2023.

Trunk or Treat event set for October 28 in Mt. Iron

The St. Louis County Sheriff’s Office and Virginia Police Department are partnering with Legacy Church, Legacy's Celebrate Recovery ministry, and Recovery Alliance Duluth (RAD) to host a Trunk or Treat event on Saturday, October 28, from 2-4 p.m., in the Plaza 53 parking lot, 5465 Mountain Iron Drive.  The event is free and open to the public.
