Rescue in the BWCA

On September 7th, 2025, at 1:15pm, the St. Louis County Sheriff's Office Dispatch received notice of a distress signal from the Boundry Waters Canoe Area Wilderness, via a Garmin safety device.  The GPS coordinates placed the spot of the distress west of Contest Lake, in the area of Stuart River portage.  This area is northwest of Ely.  Garmin informed the St. Louis County Sheriff's Office they had updated information and that the injured party had a possible broken leg.

Public Invited to Learn about Community Development Block Grant Funds

The St. Louis County Economic and Community Development Department distributed $1.8 million in federal grant money to communities and non-profit organizations in St. Louis County in the last year. These Community Development Block Grant (CDBG) funds helped pay for: 

  • Chisholm's Memorial Park project, which increased accessibility through playground equipment and pour-and-play slabs.
  • Housing projects, including supporting One Roof Community Housing with the rehabilitation of two homes in southern St. Louis County, and North St. Louis County Habitat for Humanity for the rehabilitation of a property in Chisholm and another in Hibbing.
  • Infrastructure projects in Hibbing, Aurora, Ely, and Tower.
  • Twelve non-profit programs offering supportive services for low-income residents and those experiencing homelessness.

St. Louis County Board considers property tax levy for 2026

The St. Louis County Board has given initial approval for the 2026 maximum property tax levy in the amount of $202,669,428. This is a 12.4% increase in the levy compared to last year, though the impact will be somewhat reduced by the county's 7% increase in property tax base.

Single vehicle accident sends man to the hospital

Single vehicle accident sends man to the hospital

The single vehicle rollover occurred in a highway construction zone in Embarrass Township. The elderly male driver was traveling southbound on Highway 21 and failed to navigate a left turn after realizing Highway 21 was closed for construction. Construction workers on scene assisted first responders with removing the driver from the vehicle.
