County Board recommends Kim Maki as St. Louis County Attorney

The St. Louis County Board has given preliminary approval to appoint Kim Maki as St. Louis County Attorney. Current County Attorney Mark Rubin has announced his retirement effective September 30. Maki's appointment would be for the remainder of Rubin's term, which runs through the end of 2022.

 

An Iron Range native, Maki has worked in the County Attorney's Office since 2011, following a decade of work in private practice. She has led the Civil Division since November 2012, providing legal advice and support to County commissioners and all County departments.

Application process begins for County Attorney position

Following the announced retirement of St. Louis County Attorney Mark Rubin, under Minnesota law, it is the County Board's responsibility to appoint someone to fill the role for the remainder of the term. 

Rubin plans to retire on September 30, 2021. His current term ends January 2, 2023.

Anyone interested in applying for the appointment should email a cover letter and resume to  Deputy County Administrator Brian Fritsinger at fritsingerb@stlouiscountymn.gov on or before August 31, 2021.

At their meeting Tuesday, commissioners expressed a commitment to keeping the selection process transparent. The Board intends to make a final decision on whom to appoint at its meeting on September 14. That meeting is scheduled to be held at the Virginia Courthouse, 300 South 5th Avenue in Virginia.

County Attorney Mark Rubin announces retirement

St. Louis County Attorney Mark Rubin has announced plans to retire at the end of September following more than 42 years of public service.

Rubin, who was raised in Duluth's Smithville neighborhood and graduated from Morgan Park High School, first joined the County Attorney's Office as an intern in 1975 while attending The College of St. Scholastica. He went on to attend what is now Mitchell Hamline School of Law, and after graduation was hired as an Assistant St. Louis County Attorney in 1978. With the exception of two years spent in private practice during the late '80s, Rubin has worked in the County Attorney's Office ever since.
