St. Louis County Public Works continues to study options to reconstruct a portion of 40th Avenue West in Duluth, and will be hosting a meeting to provide an update and get public input on new ideas. The meeting will be Monday, January 29, at 6 p.m., at Denfeld High School in the West Commons area. On January 8th, the Honorable Robert C. Friday sentenced Douglas Lee Anderson, 70, to 41 months at the Department of Corrections for his role in the November 11, 2021, death of Stanley Erkkila, St. Louis County Attorney Kim Maki said. Mr. Anderson pleaded guilty to Criminal Vehicular Homicide on November 13, 2023.

On Saturday December 30th, 2023, at approximately 0605 A.M. St. Louis County Sheriff's Deputies and area first responders were dispatched to a two-vehicle head on accident with injuries, on Hwy 5 in Balkan Township, just South of the Hibbing Taconite main entrance as a result of ice-covered roadway. One driver, who was not wearing a seatbelt, was ejected from their vehicle and is being treated for life threatening injuries. The other driver was treated at the scene with minor injuries and released.
