Duluth Jail death investigation

On Tuesday, June 24th, 2025, at about 09:35 AM, first responders and law enforcement responded to a 911 call at the St. Louis County Jail in Duluth, where an inmate was unresponsive in their cell. Life saving measures were immediately taken by jail staff and later by first responders however, these attempts were unsuccessful, and the inmate was declared deceased. At this time the cause of death is unknown.  To avoid any conflicts the Sheriff's Office has requested the Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension (BCA) respond to investigate the death.

St. Louis County Assessors to begin inspections of wildfire-damaged areas

The St. Louis County Assessor's Department will begin in-person visits next week to inspect properties damaged by the Camp House and Jenkins Creek fires. Staff will begin in Brimson and Fairbanks Township on June 23, assessing and documenting the level of damage. This information will be used to determine the total estimated market value of the improvements damaged, and the percent of damage that occurred.

On June 14th, 2025 at 1530 hours, the St. Louis County Sheriff's Office responded to the 4800 Block of Voss Road in rural Mountain Iron for the report of an ATV crash. The caller reported a single ATV crash with one unresponsive occupant.

Public input wanted for new Safety Action Plan focused on St. Louis County roads

St. Louis County Public Works is developing a new Safety Action Plan (SAP). The plan will focus on all county roads except those in Duluth. (The Duluth-Superior Metropolitan Interstate Council is conducting a separate Safety Action Plan.) The Safety Action Plan studies are made possible thanks to federal funding from the Safe Streets and Roads for All (SS4A) Program.

Jeffery Lee Niemi Sentenced

The Honorable Nicole Hopps sentenced Jeffery Lee Niemi, 40, to 30 years in prison for criminal sexual conduct involving a juvenile male at a hearing on June 10, 2025, in St. Louis County District Court in Duluth, announced St. Louis County Attorney Kim Maki. Mr. Niemi pleaded guilty to two counts of Criminal Sexual Conduct in the First-Degree during a hearing on April 17, 2025.
