Level 3 predatory offender moving to Stoney Brook Township

The St. Louis County Sheriff's Office would like to notify the public about the release of a level three predatory offender. Kenneth John Fosness III has moved to Stoney Brook Township, west of Duluth. Those offenders who are designated as Level Three, are subject to community notification upon changing addresses.
Stoney Brook Township residents and community members who have any questions, or would like to discuss this matter further are asked to call Sergeant Eric Sathers at 218-336-4311.

Boat accident on Lake Vermilion

On September 16th, 2023, at 9:03pm, the St. Louis County Sheriff's Office responded to a report of a boat accident on an island, on Lake Vermilion.  Members of the St. Louis County Sheriff's Office Rescue Squad and the Tower Fire Department responded to Rainbow Island, located in Daisy Bay and discovered a pontoon boat that had struck the island. 1st Responders located a female passenger that had been thrown from the boat, onto the island and provided medical assistance until she could be transported to shore.  The passenger was subsequently transported to the Virgina Hospital, via Tower Ambulance, due to her non-life-threatening injuries.  The driver of the boat was also transported to shore by 1st Responders and then transported, by ambulance, to the Virginia Hospital as a precaution.

Vehicle stuck by gunfire

On September 9, 2023 law enforcement was dispatched to the report of a shoot out vehicle windows near the Lakeland mobile home park located in Biwabik Township. A short time later a second 911 call was received from a male reporting that a vehicle had rammed into his parked vehicle and shot at the vehicle with a shotgun. No injuries resulted. The shooter  was subsequently taken into custody and charged with several felony level offenses. The St. Louis County Sheriff’s Office believes that this is an isolated incident and it remains under investigation.

Community Notification Meeting - Level 3 Predatory Offender

Information was previously released concerning level 3 predatory offender MICHAEL PERO, who has moved into the vicinity of Lakewood Rd and Roberg Rd in Lakewood Township. In order to provide more information to the community, the St. Louis County Sheriff's Office in conjunction with the Minnesota Department of Corrections, will be hosting a community notification meeting concerning his release. The meeting will be held on Friday, September 15, 2023, from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. at the Lakewood Town Hall, 3110 Strand Road, Duluth, MN 55803. Representatives from the Sheriff's Office and Dept. of Corrections will be available to provide the community with useful information on public safety.

Single vehicle crash with 2 fatalities

Single vehicle crash with 2 fatalities

Deputies from the St Louis County Sheriff's Office responded to an automated 911 call from an iPhone stating that the owner had been in a severe crash. The vehicle was located on a curve near the 11500 block of Highway 8, near Floodwood. Upon arrival, Deputies found 2 occupants of the vehicle deceased and the driver in critical condition still trapped inside. He was airlifted to a nearby hospital and is currently in stable condition. Alcohol and speed appear to be contributing factors of the crash and it remains under investigation.
