Fall Garden Fest celebrates "The Italian Garden"

Tomatoes, garlic and other garden goodies that are hallmarks of Italian cooking will be the star ingredients at St. Louis County Extension's annual Fall Garden Fest. "The Italian Garden" will be Thursday, October 10, at 5:30 p.m. at St. Lawrence Church, 2410 Morris Thomas Road in Duluth.

Pehrson Lodge Resort Cabin Fire

On 09-19-2019, at approximately 7:43 AM, the St. Louis County Sheriff's Office along with the Cook Fire and Ambulance Service, Greenwood Township Fire Department, and Lake Vermilion Fire Brigade were dispatched to a cabin fire at Pehrson Lodge Resort in the  2700 block of Vermilion Dr. in rural Cook, MN in Beatty Township.   Fire Personnel were able to contain the fire to the interior of a  two story log cabin.  The cabin sustained heavy smoke and water damage. The cause of the fire is currently under investigation by the St. Louis County Sheriff's Office and MN State Fire Marshal Office.  There were no reported injuries or fatalities associated with the fire.

Woman Injured in St Louis Bay While Attempting to Dock Sailboat

On 9/18/2019 at approximately 3:34 pm, The St Louis County Sheriffs Office, St Louis County Rescue Squad, Duluth Fire Department and the United States Coast Guard, responded to a female in distress near the Superior Entry in the Superior Bay. It was reported a 55 year old woman was stranded on a cement block while attempting to dock her sailboat that had drifted into Lake Superior. The woman was located by Duluth Fire Department, and transported to St Luke's to be treated for non-life threatening injuries.

Eagles Nest Township Fatality

Eagles Nest Township Fatality

On the above date and time St. Louis County Sheriff's Deputies were dispatched to a medical due to a fall at the above residence. A male had been on the roof removing a downed tree for the property owner and lost his footing falling approximately 20 feet from the roof and onto a propane tank on the ground. The male was unconscious and first responders on scene attempted life saving efforts. The male died at the scene due to his injuries. The cause and nature of the incident appears to be accidental. No foul play is suspected.

Annual meeting on stormwater pollution prevention efforts

Meeting to recap efforts to reduce stormwater pollution

There will be landscaping tips for home and business owners as well as advice on how to get better de-icing results with less salt; plus Lake Superior College will share information on how they've developed rain gardens and other outdoor landscaping both to improve the campus setting and reduce stormwater pollution getting into area streams and Lake Superior.

These are among the presentations scheduled for an annual meeting on stormwater pollution prevention, put on by members of the Regional Stormwater Protection Team. The meeting will be Tuesday, September 24, 6:30-8 p.m. at the Minnesota Department of Transportation headquarters in Duluth, 1123 Mesaba Avenue. Representatives of the cities of Duluth and Hermantown, MnDOT, St. Louis County. Lake Superior College and the University of Minnesota - Duluth, will provide information regarding their current efforts to reduce stormwater pollution, as well as their goals for next year. The public will have an opportunity to provide input and feedback. Additionally, there will be a drawing for three lucky attendees to win a six-pack of native plants to bring home.
