On 3/16/2024 shortly after 6:00 pm, a resident of the 4300 block of W. Calvary Rd. reported smoke coming up from the basement of the house. The fire was extinguished with no reported injuries.

On March 12th, 2023, at 0917 hours, the St. Louis County Sheriff's Office responded to the intersection of Wolf Road and County Hwy 101, in rural Mt. Iron.  It had been reported that a small passenger car had struck a commercial vehicle and the driver of the car was stuck in the vehicle.

People who live in communities with emergency sirens are used to hearing those sirens sound as a test at 1 p.m. on the first Wednesday of every month. However, today's siren test in St. Louis County mistakenly gave the impression of a real emergency.

ATV and rider through the ice on Birch Lake Babbitt, MN

On March 2nd, 2024 at approximately 07:10 A.M., Area first responders were notified of a person that had fallen through the ice on their ATV on the North Bay area of Birch Lake, outside of the City of Babbitt, MN. The driver and lone occupant, a 64 yr old male from the Babbitt area and his vehicle sunk into the water after encountering a pressure ridge. Both were pulled from the water by first responders with no serious injuries reported.

ATV Crash

ATV Crash

On March 1st, 2023 at 8:45pm, the St. Louis County Sheriff's Office responded to an ATV crash with injuries, located within the 2600 Block of Co. Rd. 77, Greenwood Township.  A Fairbault resident was visiting a family cabin for the weekend and had gone on an ATV ride.  While navigating a steep ditch on Co. Rd 77, the ATV slid downhill, on ice and then flipped over, landing on the driver of the ATV.  The driver later had to be transported via helicopter to a Duluth area hospital for serious injuries.
