The St. Louis County Board has issued a resolution expressing its strong support for the Minnesota National Guard 148th Fighter Wing to be selected to receive the F-35 Lightning II mission. The resolution highlights that the 148th being based in Duluth is an ideal location in terms of airspace, noting that it's the largest and most accessible fighter training airspace in the continental United States; and is strategically located for both homeland defense and arctic readiness.

On October 24, 2026 at approximately 1504 hours, first responders and law-enforcement were dispatched to the report a male found deceased on a rock ridge located on the Echo Trail, north of Ely. 

One person was injured in a single vehicle rollover accident near Industrial Avenue and Bear Trap Road. The State Patrol is assisting with the investigation.

The accident happened in the area of Rice Lake Road and West Calvary Road. One adult male was transported by Mayo Ambulance with minor injuries. Limited visibility due to fog is believed to be a contributing factor in the crash.

An adult male experienced a medical incident resulting in his vehicle ending up partially submerged in the Cloquet River in Industrial Township.
