One injured in ATV crash in the City of Rice Lake

On September 10, 2020, at approximately 5:30 PM, St. Louis County Sheriff Deputies were dispatched to the 4000 block of Fairview Road in the City of Rice Lake for a report of an ATV accident with injuries. When deputies arrived on scene they located the ATV driver, LANE, laying in the middle of Fairview Road, unconscious. LANE was transported to a local hospital in serious condition. LANE was not wearing a helmet at the time of the accident. Speed is a contributing factor. St. Louis County Sheriff's Office would like to remind all ATV riders to obey all traffic laws while riding on public roadways and recommends that all ATV riders regardless of age or experience wear a helmet.

Applications available for MN Sheriff's Association scholarships

Applications available for MN Sheriff's Association scholarships

The Minnesota Sheriff's Association (MSA) is again offering scholarships to to students pursuing careers in law enforcement, and St. Louis County Sheriff Ross Litman is encouraging local students to apply. Through its Law Enforcement Scholarship Program for 2020, MSA will award $600 scholarships to up to 15 students. These scholarships are due to the coordinated efforts of the 87 sheriffs of the State of Minnesota.

County Board considers lower 2021 property tax impact, to vote Sept. 22

The St. Louis County Board has given initial approval for the 2021 maximum property tax levy in the amount of $147,721,854. While this is an increase of 1.48% compared to this year's levy, the county's property tax base has increased by 5%, which means most property owners will pay less on the county portion of their property tax bill.

Structure Fire in Rice Lake Township

Structure Fire in Rice Lake Township

On 9/7/2020 at approximately 9:00AM, the St. Louis County Sheriff’s Office, Rice Lake Fire Department, Lakewood Fire Department, Gnesen Fire Department, Normanna Fire Department, and the Air National Guard Fire Department responded to a call of a garage fully engulfed in flames on the 5500 block of Jean Duluth Road in Rice Lake Township. There were no occupants in the garage at the time of the fire but two vehicles and an ATV were destroyed.  Firefighters were able to extinguish the fire before nothing more than minor cosmetic damage occurred to the house which was approximately 25 feet away. The garage was a total loss. No injuries were reported from the incident. The cause of the fire is unknown but does not appear to be of a suspicious nature.  The incident remains under investigation by the State Fire Marshall and the St. Louis County Sheriff’s Office.
