St. Louis County contracts with Midwest Medical Examiner's Office for medical examiner services including autopsies and death investigations. Dr. A. Quinn Strobl, a certified forensic pathologist, serves as Chief Medical Examiner.

The Midwest Medical Examiner's Office seeks to honor those who have died by providing scientific, consistent and compassionate investigation into the circumstance of death. Their team of professionals includes three forensic pathologists, numerous on-call death investigators, plus support staff.

The medical examiner is an independent official of the county, subject only to appointment, removal, and budgeting by the County Board per MN Statute 390.011 (https://www.revisor.mn.gov/statutes/?id=390.11).
