Rice Lake Road to re-open Saturday, other project updates

Rice Lake Road in Duluth will re-open to thru traffic on Saturday, August 26, by no later than 5 p.m. The road has been closed for approximately three weeks between Arrowhead Road and Public Safety Drive due to work to replace a culvert on Chester Creek. Even though the road will be open, significant delays are expected to occur next Thursday, August 31, as paving will be occurring near the intersection of Rice Lake Road and Arrowhead Road. Drivers are recommended to use alternate routes that day.

Rice Lake Road detour extended to August 26

Rice Lake Road in Duluth will remain closed to through traffic for an extra week between Central Entrance and Arrowhead Road. The road is now set to reopen August 26. The closure is necessary for the replacement of a culvert on Chester Creek. Working around existing utilities has taken longer than expected. The extended closure will also enable the contractor to make further progress with intersection work to better accommodate the increased traffic that will come when area schools reopen.

Public Works wins national honor for road conditions monitoring system

St. Louis County Public Works the U.S. DOT Federal Highway Administration's "National Build a Better Mousetrap - SMART Transformation Award” for a new camera and data gathering system. The system enables Public Works supervisors to monitor  road conditions remotely from a computer or smart phone and make better decisions faster about the response needed. The award celebrates innovative solutions to transportation problems in local and tribal government regions.

St. Louis County partners with Minnesota North College - Hibbing to offer skilled apprenticeship program for heavy equipment mechanics

As early as this fall, students in the Diesel Mechanics/Heavy Equipment program at Minnesota North College - Hibbing will have an opportunity to apply for a skilled apprenticeship position with St. Louis County Public Works. This new apprenticeship program will provide valuable real-life experience for students while also helping develop an internal pool of future Heavy Equipment Mechanics for the County.

Repairs being made on Beatty Road in preparation for next season construction

St. Louis County Public Works crews are making improvements to Beatty Road in Beatty Township north of Cook that is resulting in temporary closures of the road. The project began in July and is expected to continue until mid-September.
