Fatal Snowmobile Crash

On February 16th at approximately 5:54 P.M. the St. Louis County Sheriff's Office was notified of a snowmobile crash with injuries on the Cook Area Snowmobile Trail, near the Vermillion River in the area of Buyck, MN.

Upon arrival, emergency personnel located the crash scene approximately 3 miles east of County Rd. 422 on the snowmobile trail. It appears that the crash happened on a straight part of the trail just after a curve. MacDonald was the 2nd to last in a larger group of snowmobilers, when the last person in the group the came upon the crash scene.  MacDonalds snowmobile had left the trail and stuck a tree, throwing him from the machine. Despite the extensive efforts of other snowmobilers passing by, first responders, and other medical personnel, MacDonald died at the scene.

Tax Forfeited Land Auction results in $360,840 in sales

An 80-acre site in Gnesen Township was the top seller in today's Tax Forfeited Property Auction. The partially wooded property sold for $143,500, more than $40,000 more than the initial offered price, following bids by several interested parties. Other successful sales ranged from a 2.5 acre lot on Elephant Lake in Orr, which sold for $55,100, to numerous smaller lots that were purchased for a couple hundred or a couple thousand dollars. All together, 17 tax forfeited properties were purchased, adding them back to the property tax base, for a total of $360,840.

County Board approves $657,000 funding to combat Aquatic Invasive Species

St. Louis County commissioners unanimously approved the distribution of $657,000 of state funds for projects that will prevent the introduction and limit the spread of Aquatic Invasive Species (AIS) in lakes and rivers in St. Louis County. Eight projects were selected following review by the County’s Planning and Community Development Department based on what fit best with the County’s Aquatic Invasive Species plan.

House Fire - Lavell Township

House Fire - Lavell Township

On February 10th, 2019 at approximately 4:38 P.M. St. Louis County 911 operators received a report of a house fire located at 9578 Zim Rd. which is Southeast of the City of Hibbing.

Several area fire departments (Cherry Twp, Clinton Twp, Central Lakes Twp, Toivola Twp, McDavitt Twp Fire Departments) responded and found the house was showing flames from the east side of the residence, and quickly consumed the rest of the A framed styled house.
