Disposal Fees
Solid waste management in St. Louis County is funded by fees for the cost of disposal, and by the Solid Waste Service Fee assessed to properties.
Waste Disposal (Tipping) Fees
Fees for disposal of solid wastes are set by the St. Louis County Board. Rates differ by the type of material. Additional disposal charges* apply to garbage generated outside of the management area.
We do not accept cash at any of our solid waste sites. Payment may be made by check or by punch coupon at all sites, or by electronic disposal card, Discover, VISA, MasterCard and debit cards at the Regional Landfill, Aurora, Brookston, Cook, Hibbing, and Northwoods(Ely) Transfer Stations.
Here are some disposal fees for wastes generated within the solid waste management area.
- Household garbage:$1.00 per 32 gallon garbage bag/can, or $45.63 per ton (only at sites with scales)
- Mattresses and box springs: $8.00 each piece.
- Televisions and other CRTs: 19" or less - $1.00; larger sizes - $2.00
- Demolition material: $13.50 per cubic yard, or $39.67 per ton (only at sites with scales)
- Asbestos is accepted only at the Regional Landfill at $72.54 per cubic yard. You must call 218-741-8207 at least 24 hours in advance of disposal.

For wastes generated outside the solid waste management area the following fees apply:
- Household garbage: $2.37 per 32 gallon garbage bag/can, or $106.99 per ton (only at sites with scales)
- Mattresses and box springs: $16.00 each piece.
- Demolition material: $19.50 per cubic yard, or $53.67 per ton (only at sites with scales)
- Asbestos is accepted only at the Regional Landfill at $108.81 per cubic yard. You must call 218-741-8207 at least 24 hours in advance of disposal.

*All demolition wastes and garbage brought from outside of the solid waste management area is assessed a surcharge as allowed by MN Statute 115A.919.
Solid Waste Service Fees
St. Louis County charges a solid waste service fee to all properties within the County not served by the Western Lake Superior Sanitary District. The service fee is not a collection charge. The fee is necessary to provide appropriate solid waste and recycling facilities and solid waste disposal opportunities for the property owners or lease holders in St. Louis County, both year-round and seasonal, as mandated by the State of Minnesota.
The annual Solid Waste Service Fees have remained the same since 1995.
Residential property: $58.00
Commercial property: $ 58.00 to $174.00 based on Estimated Market Value
Seasonal property: $19.72
