Disposal Fees

St. Louis County is divided into two areas for the purpose of managing solid waste and recycling.  Contact WLSSD if you live in the Duluth or the South Service Area at 218-722-3336.  All other areas of the County are served by the Environmental Services Department.  Contact us at 800.450.9278.

Fees for disposal of solid wastes are set by the St. Louis County Board.  Rates differ by the type of material.  Additional disposal charges* apply to garbage generated outside of the management area.
 

Here are some disposal fees for wastes generated within the solid waste management area.

• Household garbage:$1.50 per 32 gallon garbage bag/can, or $57.57 per ton (only at sites with scales)
• Stumps and rootballs are charged at the regular garbage rates.  They are not considered brush and branches.
• Mattresses and box springs:  $9.00 each piece.
• Televisions and other CRTs:  19" or less - $3.00; larger sizes - $6.00
• Demolition material: $13.00 per cubic yard, or $44.00 per ton (only at sites with scales)
• Asbestos is accepted only at the Regional Landfill at $72.79 per cubic yard.  You must call 218.741.8207 at least 24 hours in advance of disposal.

For wastes generated outside the solid waste management area the following fees apply:

• Household garbage: $3.00 (as of 1/1/2015) per 32 gallon garbage bag/can, or $110.90 (as of 1/1/2015) per ton (only at sites with scales)
• Mattresses and box springs:  $16.50 each piece.
• Demolition material: $19.00 per cubic yard, or $58.00 per ton (only at sites with scales)
• Asbestos is accepted only at the Regional Landfill at $109.06 per cubic yard.  You must call 218-741-8207 at least 24 hours in advance of disposal.

St. Louis County charges a solid waste service fee to all properties within the County not served by the Western Lake Superior Sanitary District. The service fee is not a collection charge. The fee is necessary to provide appropriate solid waste and recycling facilities and solid waste disposal opportunities for the property owners or lease holders in St. Louis County, both year-round and seasonal, as mandated by the State of Minnesota.


First Residential / Seasonal / Recreational Parcel:     $60.00
Commercial property:   $ 70.00 to $325.00 based on Estimated Market Value
Second Residential / Seasonal / Recreational Parcel:        $20.00
