FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE:
St. Louis County Announces Two Public Meetings to Receive Comment
on the 2012 Property Tax Levy and Operating Budget
On December 13, 2012, the St. Louis County Board is expected to certify its property tax levy for 2012 as required by State statute. That levy will raise approximately $110 million, which represents an increase of 1.8% over the amount raised in 2011. Minnesota Statute 275.065, known as the “Truth-in-Taxation” statute, requires that all county boards hold a meeting to allow the public the opportunity to comment on proposed property tax levies and budgets for the next fiscal year.
Although only one public meeting is required by statute, the St. Louis County Board will host two meetings to allow more opportunities for our citizens to communicate opinions regarding the proposed property tax levy and county budget for 2012.
The proposed 2012 county budget will be reviewed at Public Meetings scheduled for:
December 1, 2011, 7:00 p.m., Virginia Courthouse, 300 5th Ave. South, Virginia, MN
December 8, 2011, 7:00 p.m., Duluth Courthouse, 100 North 5th Ave. W., Duluth, MN
The total proposed St. Louis County budget for 2012 is $308,254,519, about 35% of which is funded through the local property tax levy. The budget will allow the county to carry out high quality, efficient services to residents in the areas of planning and zoning, land management, public safety, environmental services, public works, public health, social services, criminal justice, economic development and general government services. The proposed 2012 St. Louis County budget includes 1,697 full-time equivalent employees, which is a 33% reduction over the last ten years.
