FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE:
County Extension’s “Root Veggie Fest” Features Best Root Crops
Growing and Cooking with Root Vegetables in the Northland
Local production of garden vegetables and improving family diets is of increasing interest in the northland. To address this interest, the St. Louis County Extension Office will be present the “Root Veggie Fest,” a program devoted to growing, preparing and preserving root crops on Thursday night, October 6, 2011. “Root Veggie Fest” will describe how to successfully select and grow appropriate vegetables such as beets, carrots, rutabagas, radishes, turnips and other root crops that will thrive in our region, and also provide easy cooking and preparation techniques.
The evening will include a “taste test” of dishes featuring locally grown root crops. Participants will receive a collectible cookbook, with recipes from St. Louis County Master Gardeners and a “Root Crop Resource Guide,” both developed specifically for the event. The program will be held at St. Michael’s Church, 4901 East Superior Street, Duluth, MN.
Registration begins at 5:30 p.m. with the program scheduled from 6:00 to 8:30 p.m. The cost is $15 for one person, $25 for a couple. Couples will receive one copy of all materials. For registration information contact the St. Louis County Extension Office at 218-733-2870.
