Babbitt Lions Club to Receive Volunteer Recognition Award
St. Louis County will present a Volunteer Recognition Award to the Babbit Lions Club on Tuesday, March 27, 2007 at the Morse Town Hall as part of its regular St. Louis County Board meeting. Fourth District Commissioner Mike Forsman will present the St. Louis County Volunteer Recognition to the Babbitt Lions Club.
The Babbitt Lions Club was chartered on Saturday, May 5, 1973 with 69 members. It is part of the Lions Club International, which is the largest service organization in the world. This club belongs to Sub-District 5M10, a part of Multiple District 5M, an international district encompassing Minnesota, Manitoba and Northwest Ontario.
Today, the Babbitt Lions Club has a membership of more than 70 members and is still growing. They welcome both men and women the opportunity to work together to serve their community. Their mission is to provide services to their community and the world by assisting the sight and hearing impaired, and those suffering from diabetes. They provide emergency assistance to those unable to help themselves. They also assist in the development of the youth, contribute to health care services, and build needed community facilities such as parks and playgrounds.
Some of the local projects are: Medical equipment loan program, diabetes awareness, local health and injury needs, leader dog and hearing dog, constructing a handicapped ramp at the fishing pier on Birch Lake, building a dock at Kramer’s Landing and Bear Island Lake, the area food shelf, wheelchair ramps at homes, Christmas for the disadvantaged, St. Louis County Adopt a Highway, and many more projects to numerous to mention.
