Chris Jensen Health and Rehabilitation Receives
Prestigious Peer Group Award
Care Providers of Minnesota, the state’s premier long-term care trade association, has awarded Chris Jensen’s Safe Patient Handling Program Implementation Team with its 2006 Quality Improvement Team Award. Long-term care facilities from across the state nominate candidates each year for this honor, and with last week’s presentation at Care Providers of Minnesota’s annual convention in Minneapolis, Chris Jensen Health and Rehabilitation joined a very select group of recipients who have improved the quality of life of Minnesota long-term care facility residents and staff.
The Quality Improvement Team Award was presented to Chris Jensen Health and Rehabilitation for their recognition of a problem and development of a solid, workable plan of action that has helped to create a facility that is safer and more quality oriented.
During a two year period, Chris Jensen Health and Rehabilitation Center experienced more than 50 OSHA (Occupational Safety and Health Organization) recordable injuries to staff. A review of the accident and injury data determined that a high percentage of the injuries were directly related to manually transferring and repositioning residents. The Safe Patient Handling Program Implementation Team researched what other facilities had done regarding safe patient handling. What resulted was a phased program to systematically identify and address facility injury exposure, based upon relative risk of injury and availability (cost) of the solution.
The focused team effort and the commitment to implementation reduced the total number of transfer-related injuries to staff by 75% and reduced the OSHA recordable transfer related injuries to staff by 80% in the first year of implementation. Joe Austin, St. Louis County’s Employee Safety and Development – Division Administrator, accepted the award for the Safe Patient Handling Program Team. The project is estimated to have had a 1-2 year return on investment based upon projected injury associated expenses at the facility.
Care Providers of Minnesota and the entire Minnesota long-term care community congratulate Chris Jensen Health and Rehabilitation on receipt of the 2006 Care Providers of Quality Improvement Team Award.
