Bob Watts to Receive Volunteer Recognition Award
As part of St. Louis County’s Sesquicentennial year, the County is presenting a Volunteer Recognition Award to Bob Watts of Canyon, Minnesota, today Tuesday, October 24, 2006 at 9:30 AM at the Virginia City Hall, Virginia, Minnesota as part of its regular St. Louis County Board meeting. Sixth District Commissioner and St. Louis County Board Chair Keith Nelson will present the St. Louis County Volunteer Recognition Award to Mr. Watt.
Bob Watts was born in 1922 in Duluth, MN and graduated from Duluth Central in 1940. Bob is president of the 125th Field Artillery Association, a group of World War II veterans who served together in the Duluth‑based field artillery unit of the Minnesota National Guard. The unit became part of the 34th Red Bull Division and fought in Africa and Italy, with Bob spending much of his time in combat near the front lines. After the war Bob worked for the insurance business and later became a postal carrier. He settled at Three Lakes in Canyon in 1968.
Bob co‑founded the Three Lakes Development Association in 1971. It was his goal at that time to dedicate all his efforts to help the Three Lakes area be the best and safest in the entire country. He served on each and every committee and has missed only two organizational meetings in the past 35 years. He has written and published 285 Three Lakes Development Association newsletters.
Bob has raised seven successful children along with 16 grandchildren. For the past 34 years Bob has placed flags at the veteran’s grave sites at Sunrise Memorial Park in Hermantown on Memorial Day. He is a member of the Elks Club, American Legion, VFW, St. Louis County Historical Society, a member of the Duluth Curling Club for 44 years, 1125th F.A. Association, Prime Timers of Canyon, and the North Lakes Golf Association for 42 years. In his spare time he enjoys golf, hunting, curling, fishing, his computer and TV sports.
