6th District Commissioner Keith Nelson, Chair of the St. Louis County Board, has announced that there will be a news conference on Thursday, October 19, 2006 at 2:00 PM in Courtroom 4 of the Virginia Courthouse, 300 South 5th Avenue, Virginia, Minnesota to announce a new Drug Court.
St. Louis County and Arrowhead Regional Corrections have received a $250,000 grant from the Department of Justice, Bureau of Justice Assistance to establish the Drug Court program in Northern St. Louis County. Congressman Jim Oberstar, who was instrumental in helping to obtain the grant, is expected to attend the press conference Thursday, along with St. Louis County Commissioners, Arrowhead Regional Corrections staff, 6th Judicial District Judges and staff, the St. County Attorney and Sheriff, Public Health and Human Services staff, and others involved in combating the growing methamphetamine problem in northeastern Minnesota.
Drug Court is a collaborative effort between the judiciary, prosecution, public defender, law enforcement, corrections, social services, treatment providers, and members of the community. It attempts to reduce illicit drug use by intensive supervision and chemical dependency treatment of non-violent offenders, and by imposing immediate sanctions and rewards upon the offenders before and after their convictions for low level drug charges.
