Spring Gardening Extravaganza Conference

The St. Louis County Extension Office is conducting its annual Spring Gardening Extravaganza, this year highlighting “Gardening in a Warming Northern Climate.” The conference will begin at 9:00 a.m. on Saturday, April 21st at Hermantown High School, 4335 Hawk Circle Drive, Hermantown, MN.  The program will examine current weather trends in northern Minnesota and what this means for area gardeners. The conference will feature seventeen lectures and workshop sessions, as well as displays and educational activities.

Topics include information on weather trends, new USDA plant hardiness zones, growing warm season fruits and vegetables, new hydrangeas, hot season annuals, warmer season trees, shrubs and perennials, ornamental grasses, garden photography, and starting warm season vegetables from seed.  Several hands-on workshop sessions will be offered including: coordinating colors in the landscape; creating decorative flower pots; and making colorful “garden wind catchers.”

A special question-and-answer session will feature WDSE Public Television’s “Great Gardening” personalities, Pamela Fish, Tom Kasper, and Bob Olen.  The cost of the program is $40 which includes refreshments, lunch, a conference resource book, and classes.
