St. Louis County Land Department becomes the “Land & Minerals” Department
The St. Louis County Board has approved a name change for the Land Department. Effective January 1, 2012, the Land Department will become the Land & Minerals Department.  The name change is a more reflective of the many functions provided by the department including the importance of managing St. Louis County’s incredible, unique natural resources and minerals that are a vital past and future legacy for the benefit of county residents.

For years, the St. Louis County Land Department has been charged with maintaining and improving forest health and productivity, providing raw material for the local timber industry, protecting wildlife habitat, soil resources, and implementing management practices to protect and maintain water quality in streams, lakes, and other water bodies to contribute to the conservation of biological diversity. This mission will not change as the department’s dedicated employees continue to provide opportunity for tourism and recreation and assuring long-term forest productivity and conservation of forest and water resources.

The new name recognizes the significant and increasing role the Land & Minerals Department will play in the economic arena surrounding land and its underlying mineral wealth, and the vast resources of both ferrous and nonferrous minerals that continue to make St. Louis County unique in the world.
