FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE:
St. Louis County Board to Honor Sara Thomsen and the Echoes of Peace Choir With Arts Excellence Award
In keeping with the St. Louis County Board’s 2011 theme of recognizing those county residents who have excelled in the fields of arts and sciences, First District County Commissioner Frank Jewell will honor Sara Thomsen and the “Echoes of Peace Choir” with the Board’s “Excellence in the Arts & Sciences” award on Tuesday, November 8th. Ms. Thomsen and the Choir will be recognized by the County Board at the beginning of its meeting starting at 9:30 a.m. The meeting will be held in the St. Louis County Courthouse, County Board Room, Duluth, MN. The Choir will perform two numbers as part of the presentation.
Commissioner Jewell explained his selection of the “Echoes of Peace Choir” by saying, “The Choir’s repertoire includes songs from around the world, songs of justice and peace, songs of hope and longing, and songs that are simply fun and full of celebration.” As Sara Thomsen, founder and artistic director says, “At the heart of what we are about is coming together to sing in harmony as a means of both personal, local and, yes, even global transformation. Singing opens the heart and re-enchants the spirit. Harmony brings harmony!”
Anyone with a desire to sing is welcome to join this non-audition community choir. No previous singing or music reading experience is required. Sara Thomsen began the Echoes of Peace Choir in 2002 to sing for the Art of Peace event in Duluth, MN, a local response to the events of September 11th, 2001. The Art of Peace event, held annually for six years, brought varied artistic expressions together to inspire and instigate creativity and peacemaking. The choir has since grown and has evolved to presenting biannual concerts and singing at various community events throughout the year. The Duluth choir currently has a membership of about seventy-five voices.
Echoes of Peace is a member of the Ubuntu Choirs Network, a "growing community of choirs who believes that the joy of singing is a universal birthright, and that together, regardless of musical background, we can help improve the world by joining voices in song." This network was founded by Shivon Robinsong and Denis Donnelly, co-directors of the “Gettin' Higher Choir” in Victoria, B.C. Canada. Sara Thomsen is a graduate of their Community Choir Leadership Training.
