FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE:

Groundbreaking Scheduled for Virginia Courthouse Construction Project

Tuesday, October 25, 2011, 2:30 p.m.

The long awaited Groundbreaking Ceremony beginning the formal construction of the Virginia Courthouse addition and remodeling project will be held Tuesday, October 25, 2011 at 2:30 p.m. on the south side of the Virginia Courthouse, 300 South Fifth Avenue, Virginia, MN. This project will complete the courthouse long-term master plan and bring the 100-year-old facility up to date for safety, building code, and current efficiency standards. St. Louis County Commissioners authorized a construction services contract for the project with Max Gray Construction of Hibbing, Minnesota for $5,706,800 at their October 11th Board Meeting.

The project is being funded with proceeds from a 2010 bond sale, and includes remodeling the building interior, energy upgrades, and a new addition for Sheriff’s Office functions. When completed, the Virginia Courthouse remodeling project will benefit the County Attorney’s Office and Arrowhead Regional Corrections’ Probation offices by relieving overcrowding and addressing critical security issues. The building’s obsolete windows, heating and ventilation systems, and mechanical infrastructure will also be replaced along with installation of a state-of-the-art energy management system.

Sixth District County Commissioner Keith Nelson will lead the Groundbreaking Ceremony with Commissioners Steve O’Neil of Duluth and Mike Forsman of Ely. A special slate of guests speaking at the event includes Steve Peterson, Mayor of Virginia, St. Louis County Attorney Mark Rubin, Minnesota Sixth Judicial District Judge James Florey, County Sheriff Ross Litman, and a representative of the Iron Range Legislative Delegation.

The public is invited to attend the ceremony and to review the plans for the renovated St. Louis County Virginia Courthouse. Construction is expected to be completed by the fall of 2012.
