St. Louis County Board to Honor the Duluth East Daredevils Robotics Team
In keeping with the St. Louis County Board’s 2011 theme of recognizing those county residents and groups who have excelled in the fields of arts and sciences, Fifth District County Commissioner Peg Sweeney will honor the Duluth East Daredevils Robotics Team with the county’s “Excellence in the Arts & Sciences” award next Tuesday, August 2nd. The Robotics Team will be recognized by the County Board beginning at 9:30 a.m. just prior to its regular meeting scheduled for the County Board Room of the St. Louis County Courthouse, 100 North 5th Ave. W., Duluth, MN.

Commissioner Sweeney explained her selection of the Duluth East Daredevils Robotics Team by saying, “I was very excited to see the team’s demonstration at the recent South St. Louis County Fair. So many times youth today get such a bum rap, and I wanted these young people to be recognized for the really great work they do.”

The Robotics Team has been in existence for four years, and has grown from eight students the first year, to 28 students (eight girls and twenty boys) today from both of Duluth’s public high schools. Because of the team’s continued success by placing higher in competitive rankings each year, Duluth was honored to be chosen as the site of an inaugural Lake Superior Regional Robotics Competition at the DECC, earlier this year. The Daredevils’ robot, “Archie,” took first place at the event beating 40 other robot entrants. At the North Star Regional competition in Minneapolis, MN, “Archie” was ranked number one out of the 60 competing robots.

The entire Duluth East Daredevil Robotics Team will be on hand to provide the County Board with an inspirational technological demonstration of “Archie’s” capabilities.
