St. Louis County Board to Honor Hibbing Artist
Hugh Reynolds with Excellence Award
In keeping with the St. Louis County Board’s 2011 theme of recognizing those county residents who have excelled in the fields of arts and sciences, Seventh District County Commissioner Steve Raukar will honor Hibbing artist Hugh Reynolds with the Board’s “Excellence in the Arts & Sciences” award next Tuesday, May 24th.  Mr. Reynolds will be recognized by the County Board beginning at 9:30 a.m., at the beginning of the County Board meeting to be held in the City Council Chambers of the Hibbing City Hall, 401 East 21st Street, Hibbing, MN.

Commissioner Raukar explained his selection of Hugh Reynolds by saying, “Mr. Reynolds is self-taught, for the most part, yet his paintings have captured the beauty and documented well-known local places, landmarks, and landscapes in the Hibbing and Chisholm areas in a manner that evokes memories and preserves a period of time for future generations to enjoy.”

Although born in Hibbing, Mr. Reynolds was raised in Washington, Wisconsin, and West Virginia. After service in the Marine Corp and living several years in Alaska doing odd jobs and oil paintings, Reynolds returned to the Hibbing area where his parents owned property. Since both parents were Hibbing natives, he remembers stories of their experiences during the Great Depression and in war time. Mr. Reynolds shared that, because of this, “…the old part of town is of natural interest and a good subject. People have always been nice and encouraging, so if you see me in a care or in an odd place hunkered over a piece of paper, please don’t call the police.”
