FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE:
St. Louis County’s New and Improved Website is Live!
On March 8, 2011, St. Louis County officially launched its new and improved website. For the past year, representatives from multiple county departments have been working to create a new website that better serves county customers. The primary focus areas have been on developing a county-wide site that has a common look and feel, organized by topic area rather than by department. As a large complex organization serving all of St. Louis County in many different capacities, the goal was to provide users with the information they are seeking in the most efficient and effective manner possible.
Search functions have been optimized to allow quicker access to information and services. All county programs and services are now organized under six main headings: Home, Government, Land & Property, Law & Public Safety, Adults & Families, and Transportation. The former website was organized to provide information by department, but the new site is completely changed to present information and services more logically by topic. Additionally, the URL address has been simplified to make it easier to remember and use the new county web address. The new URL is www.stlouiscountymn.gov .
Some of the exciting new features include an “E-Request” topic under the “Home” tab, which allows a user to request specific information on a number of topics including: Board of Commissioners general contact, data practices information requests, geospatial data requests, and veterans’ services. More E-Request forms will be created as the need for them is identified. St. Louis County is using Facebook for some of its services, and these are linked from the main home page, along with YouTube video channels and a general county phone directory. The county’s most popular website topics are also presented on the home page in easy to find tabs and links that will take users directly to that information. The new website is ADA compliant, compatible with most Internet browsers, and features interactive Google maps for all county office locations.
St. Louis County has attempted to anticipate service and information needs, but also recognizes that a good website is always a work in progress. Efforts to gather user feedback to improve the website are already underway, and tools such as user focus groups and a website feedback page are two methods the county will employ to ensure that it is meeting its goal of providing e-government tools and resources in the most practical manner possible.
