FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE:
St. Louis County and City of Mt. Iron Announce Joint News Conference
on the Relocation of County State Aid Highway No. 102
The City of Mt. Iron and St. Louis County will hold a joint news conference on Thursday, March 3, 2011 at 2p.m. in the Mt. Iron City Council Chambers, 8586 Enterprise Drive, Mt. Iron, MN. The purpose of the event is to explain plans for the relocation of County State Aid Highway (CSAH) No. 102 in the city of Mt. Iron.
The highway relocation has been requested to accommodate a proposed boundary extension of United States Steel Corporation’s Minnesota Ore Operations – Minntac Facility located nearby. The proposed route for the new highway has been under discussion with the City of Mt. Iron and St. Louis County officials for several months, and is seen as a beneficial public-private partnership that will allow major economic development along the new corridor, just north of Highway 169. Additionally, the proposed relocation will provide needed access for Mt. Iron residents between the “old town” and more recent developments which are situated closer to Highway 169. The proposed relocation is contingent upon the completion of the environmental review and permitting process.
Representatives from St. Louis County, including Sixth District Commissioner Keith Nelson and County Engineer Jim Foldesi, and Mt. Iron Mayor Gary Skalko will be present to further outline the proposed project.
