FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE:
St. Louis County Board to Honor Art Hill, long time Hibbing Band Director
In keeping with the St. Louis County Board’s 2011 theme of recognizing those county residents who have excelled in the fields of arts and sciences, Seventh District County Commissioner Steve Raukar will honor long time Hibbing High School band director Art Hill with its “Excellence in Arts & Sciences Award” next Tuesday, February 22nd. Beginning at 9:30 a.m., just prior to its regular County Board meeting to be held in the Hibbing City Council Chambers in Hibbing City Hall, Mr. Hill will be recognized by the County Board.
Commissioner Raukar explained his selection of Art Hill by saying, “Under Art’s direction the Hibbing High School band won over 300 awards due to his unique abilities to compile a great music staff and secure the confidence and cooperation of the parents and the school system. Some of the long list of honors include a performance at the Tournament of Roses Parade, the Aloha Bowl Parade and half-time show, Marching Bands of America National competition-fifth place recognition, selection to perform at the half-time program during a special game played by the Minnesota Vikings and the Chicago Bears held in Sweden, as well as many Vikings half-time shows, and an invitation to perform in the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade in New York City.”
Mr. Hill is a native of Hibbing, a graduate of Keewatin High School, and has both a Bachelor’s degree and Master’s degree from Bemidji State University. He taught in Cass Lake before coming to Hibbing in 1965, and in 1976 he became the Hibbing High School Band Director (or “Dictator,” as he was nick-named by his students).
