Commissioning and Christening Ceremony for New Sheriff’s Rescue/Patrol Boat
A rare event is being planned for next Tuesday's (October 12) St. Louis County Board meeting. The opportunity for a Commissioning and Christening Ceremony for the newly built Sheriff's Office Rescue/Patrol Boat #125 is scheduled for 1:30 p.m. inside the new sally port facility in Duluth. The sally port is located immediately to the west of the Duluth County Courthouse on West Second Street.
The County Board of Commissioners and the St. Louis County Sheriff  invite members of the news media to the ceremony for the  new boat which was funded under the American Reinvestment and Recovery Act (ARRA) 2009 Port Grant. The boat is a 28.5 foot vessel built entirely at Fraser Shipyard/Lake Assault Boats in Superior, Wisconsin. It will be stationed in the Duluth Harbor and will be used for water patrols and search and rescue operations in the Duluth harbor, St. Louis River, and Western Lake Superior area.

The boat was custom built and designed with the latest navigation technologies and is equipped to handle the sonar and underwater robotics tools that are currently used by the Sheriff’s Office and Rescue Squad. The life of the vessel is expected to exceed 30 years. Staff will be available for interviews following the short commissioning ceremony that will begin promptly at 1:30 p.m.
