Coming Soon: Indoor Facilities Returning to the County Fairgrounds in Chisholm
For the first time in nearly twenty years, since the County Fair was relocated from Hibbing to its current location in Chisholm, indoor restrooms will soon be available to fair visitors. Permanent, appropriate, and accessible 21st Century, state-of-the-art, facilities are scheduled for installation. The Minnesota Department of Employment and Economic Development and Minnesota Management and Budget recently approved St. Louis County's application and the necessary agreements allowing the project to proceed. Although they will not be ready for this year’s Fair, completion is expected by the end of the construction season.
According to 6th District St. Louis County Commissioner Keith Nelson, “The excellent work of our Legislative Delegation was key to procuring $750,000 in state bonding money for the fairgrounds. This money will also help to complete the extension of the necessary water and sewer lines to the venue, as well as to construct restroom and shower facilities.” Once this important infrastructure improvement is completed, the fairgrounds can begin to transition to a year-round entertainment venue. “Up until now, the fairgrounds were mostly limited to operating during just the five days of the County Fair,” Commissioner Nelson stated. “With this addition, we have far greater opportunities to develop and promote creative ways to best utilize the updated facility.”
Seventh District Commissioner Steve Raukar, who represents the Hibbing and Chisholm area, stressed the public/private cooperation represented by this welcome project, “The long awaited installation of permanent restroom and shower facilities at the fairgrounds reflects the dedication and commitment by representatives of Iron Range Resources, the City of Chisholm, St. Louis County, acting as fiscal agent for the project, the State of Minnesota, local legislators, the Fair Association, and most significantly, the tireless volunteers who bring us the ‘Five Best Days of Summer’ at the St. Louis County Fair.”
