                                                      Brian Toivola Receives St. Louis County Volunteer Excellence Award
At the April 6, 2010 meeting of the St. Louis County Board of Commissioners, Brian Toivola was honored with the county’s Volunteer Excellence Award for his many years of dedicated service to the St. Louis County Fair. The 125th Anniversary of the “Five Best Days of Summer”, as the fair is called, is scheduled for July 28 through August 1 at the former Iron World site in Chisholm, Minnesota. Dr. Toivola has been a member of the St. Louis County Fair Association for over twenty years and has served as its president since 1993.  In that role, he oversaw the transfer of the location of the fairgrounds from its previous site near the Hibbing Community College to its current Chisholm home.

The County Board recognized Dr. Toivola with the Volunteer Excellence Award for, “outstanding service to your community by volunteering the generous gifts of time, talent, and energy to the success of the St. Louis County Fair; in contributing to the exceptional quality of life in our region; and helping to make Saint Louis County a better place to live and grow for all of our citizens.”

Dr. Toivola is a native of Balkan Township, and was a member of the Balkan 4-H Club, and after graduating from Chisholm High School, attended veterinary school. He did his internship in Springfield, Massachusetts at the Rowley Memorial Animal Hospital, operated by the Massachusetts Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals. He practiced veterinary medicine for 43 years, with 40 of those years at the Mesaba Animal Hospital, which he owned and operated in Hibbing, MN.  In addition to his veterinary practice, he also ran a purebreed Normande cattle operation for 20 years. Dr. Toivola is a member of the American Veterinary Medial Association, the Minnesota Veterinary Medical Association, the Arrowhead Veterinary Medical Association, the North American Normande Association, serving as president for 12 years, and is a founding member of the Balkan Saddle Club.
