Call for Public Comments on St. Louis County Water Management Plan

The State of Minnesota adopted the Comprehensive Local Water Management Act in 1985. The act encourages counties to develop and implement comprehensive water management plans. These plans provide the strategic framework for citizens and elected officials in managing water resources. The plans are voluntary, however, applications for various state and federal grants require the county to have an adopted plan in place, and that it be updated on a regular basis.

The St. Louis County Planning & Development Department, in conjunction with the North and South Soil and Water Conservation Districts, is in the process of updating the St. Louis County Water Plan. A draft plan is available for public comment, and is posted on St. Louis County’s website at under the Planning and Development Department, “What’s New” link.

The St. Louis County Planning Commission will conduct a public hearing on the plan and provide a recommendation to the County Board. The County Board must approve the final version of the plan to be submitted to the State of Minnesota Board of Water and Soil Recourses for final approval.

Please contact Mark Lindhorst, Planner II, 117 Northland Office Center, 307 South First Street, Virginia, Minnesota,, 218-749-0633, with questions or comments on the plan. Comments should be submitted by February 19, 2010.
