St. Louis County Schedules Duluth Hearing on the Proposed 2010 Budget
The St. Louis County Board has scheduled the second of two public hearings to provide opportunity for citizens on the Iron Range and in the Duluth area to have input on the county’s proposed 2010 budget. The Duluth hearing is set for 6:00 p.m. Thursday, December 10, 2009 in the County Board Room, Second Floor of the Duluth Courthouse to allow the public an opportunity to communicate opinions regarding the proposed property tax levy and operating budget for the next year. The county’s proposed 2010 budget is $326,734,490 with about 1/3 of that amount coming from property tax payers. County commissioners have proposed a 1.3% increase in property taxes over last year, which places St. Louis County’s increase in the lowest third of all Minnesota counties for 2010.
The public hearing is designed to hear from citizens about the use of their property tax dollars, but is not designed to address individual questions about property market values or the reasons for specific increases or decreases in these values. Questions such as these should be addressed to the County Assessor’s Office. The final budget and 2010 property tax levy will be approved on Tuesday, December 15 at the next regularly scheduled meeting of the County Board at 9:30 a.m. in the Duluth Courthouse.
