St. Louis County Gives Volunteer Award To Ely Garden Club

As part of St. Louis County’s Sesquicentennial year, the County presented a Volunteer Recognition Award on Tuesday, March 21, 2006 in the Morse Town Hall as part of their regular County Board meeting.

Fourth District Commissioner Mike Forsman presented the St. Louis County Volunteer Award to the Ely Garden Club.  The Ely Garden Club was first started in May, 1969, when a group of volunteers from the Ely area became charter members and began planting projects.  This group has worked diligently to beautify the entrances to Ely on Hwy 169, Hwy 21, and Hwy 1 for many years.  They also maintain the gardens at the Ely Post Office, Chamber of Commerce, City Hall, Whiteside Park, Dorothy Molter’s Museum, and the Ely Bloomenson Hospital and Nursing Home.

“I personally appreciate the Ely Garden Club’s hard work, which I enjoy each time I enter my community through any of the three entrances to town,” said Commissioner Forsman.  “It’s those little things that turn a town into a community.”

The Ely Garden Club meets the 2nd Tuesday of every month at 7PM at the Grahek Apartments.  The public is always encouraged to attend and hear their horticultural programs.  The club has a pie social and plant sale every year to raise funds for their projects and activities.  The Ely Garden Club is currently working on a project in Whiteside Park where they’re renovating the plants around the band shell and replacing the decorative stone and ties around the three tiered gardens.  The Garden Club also has local tours where they visit 6- 8 gardens in the area during the summer months.  Soon they will be hosting the 8th District of the Minnesota State Horticultural meeting at the Grand Ely Lodge in April.
