St. Louis County Commemorates the 100 Year Anniversary of the
Opening of the Duluth Courthouse held on November 3, 1909

In recognition of the 100 Year Anniversary of the completion of the St. Louis County Courthouse in Duluth, St. Louis County is planning an event for Tuesday, November 3, 2009. This date is exactly 100 years since the opening ceremony was held to celebrate the completion of the Daniel Hudson Burnham designed, first government building in what would become the historic Duluth Civic Center in 1909.  Burnham was the creator of the “City Beautiful” philosophy in government building design where classical structures were placed amid promenades and parks.

As part of the recognition the County Board of Commissioners will present a proclamation commemorating the day, and will host an "Open House" from 11:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. for the public who will be offered self guided tours of selected parts of the building since major construction projects are currently underway (rather than at the 1909 event when the public was invited to “inspect every part of it," according to records from that time.)

One such location will be the Ground Floor where a 1910 Courthouse Office Display has been established comprised of antique courthouse furniture and equipment that has survived the last 100 years. Additional locations are slated to include the 2nd Floor County Board Room and Conference Room, the offices of the Duluth Commissioners, the 5th Floor County Attorney's Office with its three stained glass skylight domes, and one of the 4th Floor courtrooms and judges chambers.

Maps of tour locations will be produced and distributed outside the County Board Room located on the 2nd Floor along with county information and materials of interest. Complimentary and cake and coffee will also be offered to those attending the Open House.

Several courthouse remembrances and picture posters of the early civic center area will be on display during the event. Commissioners invite the public to consider visiting “your courthouse” on this commemoration of the opening of the first building opened in Duluth's historic Civic Center on Tuesday, November 3rd. (And remember to vote, it's also election day.)
