FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE:
“Stay in School” Project Ramps Up in St. LouisCounty as
Poster Competition Calendars Distributed to Families County-wide
St. Louis County Attorney Melanie Ford has announced that the First Annual “Stay in School” Poster Competition Calendars are now being distributed to all elementary school families in St. LouisCounty. The project is part of a multi-pronged endeavor to decrease truancy and juvenile delinquency, and cut county costs by keeping children in school. The calendar features the top poster artists from the fifth and sixth grade students across St. LouisCounty who participated during the past school year. Each month of the calendar features a poster depicting the importance of staying in school, from the perspective of a student. The calendar also includes ten “honorable mention” poster artists.
“The single most common factor in problems later in adolescence and adulthood is lack of education,” County Attorney Melanie Ford commented. “With this calendar project, our goal is to give students a creative way to think about the importance of attending school, every day, and to provide families with an enjoyable and consistent way to reinforce that message at home.”
“For a first-year project, participation has been incredibly successful. Over half the elementary schools in the county participated. We appreciated the enthusiastic participation of every student and teacher and made sure each student was recognized for taking part. We anticipate the coming year’s competition will bring us even closer to all schools participating in the event.”
CountyAttorney Ford and staff visited each of the top poster artists’ schools, presenting awards to the top poster artists and speaking with them and their classmates about why staying in school matters. Each school that participated was presented with a $200 award to use as it chose. Some schools used the award money to purchase art supplies; others used it to help finance educational trips.
The calendar project was made possible by the St. Louis County Board of Commissioners and generous donations from individuals and businesses throughout the county. To offer financial support to the coming year’s calendar project, contact Melanie Ford at (218) 726-2323 or at email@example.com.
A traveling exhibition of the top posters will be made available for display at various locations in St. LouisCounty. For further information or to view the calendar online, go to
