The City of Aurora awarded Recycling and Waste Reduction Grant from the St. Louis County Environmental Services Department

The City of Aurora has been awarded a $3,700 Recycling and Waste Reduction Grant from the St. Louis County Environmental Services Department.

The Environmental Services Department established the grant program to support efforts by local units of government to encourage waste reduction, reuse and recycling programs.  All local units of government within the County’s North Service Area with qualifying projects were eligible to apply for grant funding up to $2.00 per resident.

The 2009-2010 Waste Reduction and Recycling Grant program was put into place by the County Board and implemented by the Environmental Services Department.  “This is a positive way to let our residents play a part in recycling around St. Louis County” said Mike Forsman, St. Louis County Commissioner.  “We all need to reduce the amount of waste we throw away and if we can help find ways to keep usable resources out of the landfill it’s a win-win situation.”

The City of Aurora met the qualifications for the grant and will use the funds to recycle concrete and reuse it as Class V at the Aurora Wastewater Treatment Plant.  This will eliminate 1000 tons of material from being buried at the landfill and save the City the cost of purchasing gravel.  The concrete recycling project is underway and is expected to be completed by this fall.
