“Youth Connect” to Improve Lives of Duluth Area Homeless and At-risk Youth

Heading Home St. Louis County - Ten Year Plan to End Homelessness Committee” and Life House will host Duluth’s first “Youth Connect” on Thursday, January 29, 2009 at Life House, 102 W. First Street, 3:00pm - 7:00pm.  A variety of organizations have come together to connect Duluth’s homeless and at-risk youth with the services they need to transition out of homelessness. Local businesses, social services, citizens, and faith-based groups have partnered to bring resources to one location where those in need can find services like food and clothing, housing, employment, medical and mental health care, and education assistance. Life House will also distribute necessities like toiletries, underwear, and socks at the event.

Homelessness in our community is a real issue,” said Michelle Simmonds, Life House Supportive Housing Manager. “As we sleep in our houses each night, more than 100 to 150 teenagers and children in our city have no place to call home.  We forget homelessness spans all age groups, ethnicities and genders.”

Leon Boykin, Life House Housing Services Coordinator added,  "Homeless kids face more challenges than simply not having a roof over their heads, and events like this can make a real and positive difference for those simply in need of a helping hand. In Duluth…everyone matters.”

Those interested in supporting Duluth’s first “Youth Connect” can do so by making a financial contribution to the event.  Checks payable to “Youth Connect” can be mailed to: Life House, 102 W 1st Street, Duluth, MN  55802.

Special Note to News Media:  “Youth Connect” organizers request that news media not photograph or videotape the attendees in order to preserve respect and confidentiality.
