NEWS RELEASE

ST. LOUIS COUNTY GOES GREEN FOR VALENTINE’S DAY

The St. Louis County Board and its Property Management Department are hosting a green ribbon cutting on Thursday, February 14, 2008 at 2:00 PM on the roof of the Government Services Center, 320 West Second Street in Duluth, to unveil the department’s newest ‘green’ initiative, the installation of wind powered turbines.

Over the past few years, St. Louis County has saved taxpayers hundreds of thousands of dollars in energy savings.  The wind powered turbine system is a renewable energy pilot project that will be the first building integrated wind energy system of its type in the entire Midwest. This is a joint project between St. Louis County, Minnesota Power, Minnesota Department of Commerce, and Aerovironment Inc.

The system will consist of six small wind turbines (six foot diameter each) lined in a row along the east roof edge of the building’s roof, producing a peak output of six thousand watts (6 KW). Wind resource analysis of the downtown Duluth area determined that there is ample wind to power these small turbines effectively. This pilot project was paid for entirely by energy conservation rebates and grants.

Please join St. Louis County officials on Valentine’s Day to learn more about this ‘sweet deal’ for County taxpayers and all those concerned about our natural environment.  For more information about the wind powered turbines, please contact St. Louis County Property Management at 218-725-5085.
