The St. Louis County Solid Waste Department is pleased to announce that effective October 1, 2007, the County will lower residential tipping fees on computer monitors and televisions generated in the County’s Solid Waste Service Area (the entire County except for the Duluth Area). The fee for units 19” and smaller will be lowered from $8 to $1. The fee for units over 19” will go from $12 to $2. This reduction is possible due to recent state legislation requiring that electronics manufacturers take responsibility for recycling their products. The Department will also begin recycling residential computers, keyboards, VCRs and DVDs, printers, and fax machines. Regular solid waste tipping fees will continue to be charged for these materials.
“St. Louis County was one of the first Minnesota counties to develop a collection network for televisions and monitors,” said Steve Raukar, Chairman of the St. Louis County Board Solid Waste Subcommittee. “Now we wish to pass along to our residents the savings provided through the new legislation. We hope that this action will encourage the responsible disposal of these items. We also wish to thank our area legislators for their support of the legislation.”
The Western Lake Superior Sanitary District (WLSSD) will continue to provide electronics management programs for the Duluth area. WLSSD can be contacted by calling 218-722-3336.
