Chauncey Wargin to Receive Volunteer Recognition Award

St. Louis County will present a Volunteer Recognition Award to Chauncey Wargin on Tuesday, September 11, 2007 at 9:30 AM at the Duluth Courthouse as part of its regular St. Louis County Board meeting.  Fifth District Commissioner Peg Sweeney will present the St. Louis County Volunteer Recognition Award to Chauncey Wargin.

As a young man, Mr. Wargin helped his father farm and went to Hermantown School.  He married in 1952 and raised five children. In 1957, with the loss of his father and younger brother, Chauncey carried on the farming tradition.  He has delighted many school children with tours of his farm.  Mr. Wargin has also given many sleigh and hay rides with his Belgian horses to residents, supporting school and township events.

Chauncey drove Hermantown school busses for 38 years, with 23 as supervisor, and retired in 1988.

In 1994, the Wargin Farm received the Environmental Stewardship Award, for erecting a slurry store tank.  He served on the Hermantown Locker Plant Board.  In 1994 Chauncey was Grand Marshall in the Hermantown Festival Parade. Mr. Wargin served six years on the Northeast Correction Bureau.  He was on the ASCS/Farm Service Agency for 29 years.  Chauncey is presently on the Hermantown Historical Committee.

In 1995, the Wargins lost their home to a fire.  Chauncey rebuilt and went on.  In 2000, Chauncey’s youngest son bought the farm and the Wargins established a new home on a part of the farm, where they will enjoy retirement.

The City of Hermantown proclaimed October 17, 2000 “Chauncey and Peggy Wargin Day” in Hermantown, and the Wargins were presented a plaque with their many accomplishments. Chauncey’s quote when receiving this award was “We wouldn’t have what we have today without my partner, tractor driver, provider, good cook, my wife Peg”.

Chauncey is very dedicated to the South Saint Louis County Fair. He has been instrumental in the construction of many buildings and Grandstand facility.  He has served as Livestock Superintendent for 37 years. Mr. Wargin is in charge of the Draft Horse Pull show during the Fair, and gets involved in many other tasks during the Fair and year around. He has always been a big supporter of 4-H.

Chauncey received the Distinguished Service Award from the Minnesota Federation of County Fairs. In 2000, he received the Century Farm award. Chauncey has been a member of the South Saint Louis County Fair for 37 years, 14 years as President, and a present director. Mr. Wargin was a member of The Federation of County Fairs for 12 years, 2 years as President, a member of the Saint Louis County Promotional Board for 12 years (and still on the Board), a member of The Minnesota State Fair Board of Managers for 7 years (and still on the Board).

Please join Commissioner Peg Sweeney and the St. Louis County Board as they honor Mr. Chauncey Wargin.
