I first heard this statement last fall and it stunned me: the life expectancy of my children's generation could be shorter than that of my own. All the advances in medical knowledge and technology can't make up for our increasingly stationery lifestyles.

Josh Gorham, a public health nurse for St. Louis County, talks about this more in an editorial published today in the Duluth News Tribune, coinciding with National Bike and Walk to School Day.

Since the middle of the last century, people have been making decisions that de-emphasize sidewalks, bicycles and trails. Our culture has gradually become more and more car-centric. Is there a connection between this and our nation's growing epidemic of obesity? Here are some thoughts on that from our Public Health & Human Services Department as a lead it to Active Transportation Week, May 13-18.
